Planning Your Living Room Layout

Coffee and side tables

A coffee table usually works best at around two thirds the length of your sofa. Leave about 40 to 50 cm between the two so it’s easy to reach without crowding your legs. Side tables give you somewhere for a lamp or a cup of tea at the end of the sofa or beside an armchair. Choose one that sits close to the height of the sofa arm.

TV units and storage

Measure your TV before choosing a TV unit. The unit should be at least as wide as the screen so it looks steady. Count the devices you need to house, too. Bookcases and display cabinets add storage without taking up much floor space, and a console table behind a sofa or in the entry gives you a handy surface for keys and lamps.

Pulling the room together

Once the furniture is sorted, a rug, a lamp and a few cushions finish the room. These are often the easiest pieces to update later.
