Styling Small Outdoor Spaces
Styling small outdoor spaces can be challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. Oftentimes these spaces will have to accommodate various different activities, from lounging, to dining, to cooking, drying laundry, providing storage — these little spaces have a lot of pressure to perform.
The trick to successfully achieving a practical as well as beautiful small outdoor space is to keep functionality in mind and to choose pieces that offer flexibility as well as visual impact.

Choose a Colour Palette
Start with a colour palette and decorating theme – say modern coastal, or warm Mediterranean, or smart, monochrome urban chic. Your chosen style should be dictated by the surroundings – is it red brick, or rendered stone, or painted weatherboards? Ideally, your exterior spaces should be decorated in a similar style to your interiors, to create a lovely flow between inside and out. Also, by sticking to a quite limited colour palette, you will create visual cohesion – and your small space will have more impact.
Furniture That Suits Your Lifestyle
Furniture pieces should suit your lifestyle, so if you prefer entertaining with casual drinks and nibbles, choose a bar table with high stools – they're perfect for smaller spaces.
This could also do double-duty as a great work-from-home space if the weather allowed. If your focus is on outdoor dining, choose the biggest table that you can fit into the space.
Placing small furniture in small spaces doesn't always work best, and you'll be surprised how impactful (and practical) a larger piece can be.

Clever Lighting
Clever lighting choices can be your secret weapon in balcony or small space styling.
Don't rely on overheads as they can lack warmth and atmosphere. Instead, use lanterns – either the old-school, wonderfully romantic candle holders, or the fabulous new portable USB charged versions in contemporary designs and colours.

The Finishing Touches
Furniture that is designed to live outdoors, with practicalities like resistance to UV fading, or made from new-tech all-weather materials will last longer, ensuring that your beautiful outdoor space will be styled to perfection for the long term. And the finishing touches to any stylish outdoor space will be the accessories – cushions, throws, lamps, and tableware. Stick to your chosen colour palette and style and you'll have created an outdoor wonderland that you will want to use all-year round.
